Kinesio Taping

Kinesio Taping is a rehabilitative taping technique designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints. It can be used to decrease pain and inflammation, relax overused or tired muscles, and support muscles in unrestricted movement. Kinesio Taping also supports and extends the benefits of manual therapy administered in the clinic.

Who Can Benefit from Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio Taping (also known as “KT Taping”) can be used as an adjunctive treatment for any patient with mechanical pain, but works particularly well with overuse injuries. Any area of soft tissue (muscle or tendon) can be taped.  KT Taping is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions. At CPTE,  therapists and athletic trainers may use taping for many conditions and most commonly for:

  • Shin splints
  • Tendonitis
  • To reinforce posture
  • Edema control (swelling)
  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle Strain

How Does Kinesio Taping Work?

Kinesio Tape works with the body, allowing full range of motion (ROM) and may improve ROM, Kinesio® Taping helps influence proper biomechanics. Lymph and blood circulation are facilitated in order to rehabilitate and relieve pain. It is used for virtually all clinical conditions.Taping the body activates proprioceptors, or sensory receptors that provide information about the position of the body and its parts in space at a particular moment in time. When these get turned on, a message goes out to the brain to improve muscle function and in return, decrease the amount of pain you are experiencing.

Once your physical therapist measures, cuts and places the tape on your body, it can be comfortably worn for several days without limitations. It is sweat and water resistant, so you can swim, work out and take showers.
